Over 4,922 appear in MBBS entry test

THE NATION, KARACHI, 07th OCTOBER 2013:- As many as 4,922 candidates, wiling to get admission in MBBS and BDS programmes 2013-14, appeared in an entry test held on Sunday at the ground of NED Engineering University against 900 total seats, under the strict security measures.
The total seats include 700 in the MBBS programme at the Dow Medical College and Sindh Medical College, while 100 seats in the BDS programme of the Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad Khan Institute of Oral Health Sciences. National Testing Service (NTS) has conducted the test from 10:30am to 12:30pm. A heavy contingent of police and rangers were deployed in and around the NED Engineering University to handle any untoward situation. The provincial health secretary, Dr. Manzoor Abbas also visited the NED University and appraised arrangements of the authorities concerned.
A total of 200 invigilators have performed their duties to look at 4,922 candidates appeared in the test, while 46 candidates did not attend the paper. The ratio of female candidates in the attendance of the candidates was higher than male as it was 80 per cent.
The test was held on the time as the authority concerned had asked all candidates to get to the test centre at least two hours before the scheduled time. The examining authority has made huge arrangement for the success of the event. A heavy rush of vehicles in front of the main entrance of NED University, situated at University Road, caused nuisance not only to the candidates but also to commuters.
An official of the DUHS told The Nation that 350 seats at DMC included 228 general merit seats, 55 seats under the self-financing scheme, 22 reserved seats for candidates from the interior of Sindh, 16 reserved under the self-financing scheme for foreign nationals, one seat for disable, 16 seats for Pakistan technical assistant programme.
“Similarly, 100 admissions to be offered in the BDS programme at the Dr Ishrat-ul-Ibad Khan Institute of Oral Health Sciences.
Out of the total seats 60 would be filled under open merit, 34 under the self-financing scheme for locals and six seats under the self-financing scheme for overseas Pakistanis. A total of 40 seats are allocated at Dow International Dental College on self finance bases, while 10 seats are for overseas students. There are 50 seats on self finance bases allocated for Dow Dental College.
New technology: Chancellor of Sir Syed University of Engineering & Technology, Engr. Muhammad Adil Usman, has said that the nation is facing serious educational challenges today that call for renewed efforts to offer students a technology-based education for economic prosperity across the country. He was of view that improving education is essential to win future for the country.

To keep pace with the constant changing world of information technology, he made hard efforts to launch three new technologies i) Architecture, ii) Software Engineering and iii) Bio-Informatics from the academic year 2014.

The process of admission for the new academic year 2014 in various engineering disciplines has begun and the entry test will be held on Sunday, November 24, 2013. The admission will strictly be on merit giving weightage to the marks obtained in Matric (SSC), Intermediate (HSc) and Aptitude Test.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Syed Jawaid Hassan Rizvi pointed out that at present SSUET has over 5500 students on its roll studying in the engineering disciplines of Computer, Electronics, Bio-Medical, Civil and Telecommunication besides Computer Science.
He said that keeping the new emerging trends, the university is starting new programmes to meet the growing market demands and SSUET’s Board of Governors has already given go ahead for introducing three more technologies from this year.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Syed Jawaid Hassan Rizvi said, “The introduction of new programmes from new academic year would open up doors for those who want to enter the fields having greater potential to cope with the growing market demands.”
