Mamnoon for better education


THE NATION, ISLAMABAD, 27th SEPTEMBER 2013:- President Mamnoon Hussain Thursday emphasised the need for concerted efforts for the promotion of education as ‘national cause’, regardless of political affiliations and other considerations.
Addressing the ninth convocation of National Defence University in Islamabad ‚ he said the higher academic institutions particularly universities should promote moral values‚ ideological cohesion and offer solutions to the some of the major challenges being faced by the country, including poverty‚ unemployment‚ low growth rate and particularly menace of terrorism‚ sectarianism and corruption.
The president pointed poverty, unemployment, unskilled youth, low growth rate, terrorism, sectarianism and corruption as the major issues confronting the country and called for promoting education through joint efforts to address these challenges.
President Mamnoon said the government aims at not only improving literacy rate in the country but also expanding the base of technical education, which would help individuals earn honorable livelihood.
The government is committed towards focusing equally on primary, secondary and higher education as well as research and development,” he said. He said the government was making sincere efforts towards providing equal education opportunities to all.
“We are also committed to give due importance to educational deficiencies of our people residing in less-developed regions of the country especially in Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan and including Federally Administrated Tribal Area (FATA),” he said.
President Mamnoon said in view of weak economy and terrorism as the country’s major current challenges,the universities had a vital role to play in strengthening the national character and promoting ideological cohesion.
He stressed that besides improving educational standards particularly in research and development, the universities needed to focus on promoting the values in coherence with the ethos of society.
Academician conferred award
Dr Rohama Gill, Assistant Professor Department of Environmental Science at Fatima Jinnah Women University (FJWU), has been awarded the Best Research Paper Award by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) under the programme ‘HEC Outstanding Research Awards 2010-2011″.
The award was conferred by Zahid Hamid, Federal Minister for Science and Technology, in a commemorative award ceremony held in the HEC Auditorium, informed varsity spokesperson here on Thursday.
Speaking on the occasion, the minister stated that the objectives of such awards were to acknowledge the high performance of the Pakistani Faculty and researchers so as to promote a competitive research culture in higher education and R&D institutions.
He said that quality research deserves recognition. Moreover, he urged the researchers and scholars to pay attention towards those areas, which could contribute to the development of the region in which their institution was located.
