THE NATION, ISLAMABAD, 21st SEPTEMBER 2013:- Regional Director for the Eastern Mediterranean of World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Ala Alwan on Friday affirmed the commitment to support Pakistan in its fight against polio. Talking to the Minister of State for National Health Service, Regulations and Coordination, Mrs Saira Afzal Tarar in a meeting, the Regional Director appreciated the efforts of Pakistan in eradication of polio. The minister informed the Regional Director about the steps being taken by the government for eradication of polio and administering anti-polio drops to children. Dr Alwan said that recent years have seen very considerable progress and urged to address the issue of transmission of poliovirus in Pakistan, and the potential for spread. He said several polio-free countries in the region are now extremely vulnerable to the re-introduction of poliovirus. He emphasized the advantage of strong accountability and oversight mechanisms, at national, provincial and local level and said that there is a need to address accessing children in some parts of Fata. Dr Alwan is on a two-day visit to Pakistan to assess the current situation in polio eradication through meetings with public health leaders and national and provincial governments, and to support national action in this area.
