THE NATION, ISLAMABAD, 16th SEPTEMBER 2013:- The Naitonal Assembly session starting from today (Monday) would see a heated debate on host of issues, including the decision of dialogue with Taliban in the backdrop of continued attacks and killings of armed forces’ personnel, ongoing Karachi operation and overall political situation of the country.
The recent hike in the prices of petroleum products and its adverse effects on the overall economy would also figure in the session which would continue till September 30.
Parliamentary sources told The Nation that Interior Minister Ch Nisar Ali Khan will brief the house on the Karachi operation as well as the progress so far made for the implementation of the APC resolutions for initiation of dialogue with Taliban to bring normalcy to the country.
The sources further said the issue of undue delay in the appointment of NAB chairman would also come under discussion.
Hopefully, the government and opposition would sort out the matter during the current session. And NAB chairman would be in place before the culmination of the session.
The sources further said MQM would also give tough time to the treasury for the alleged victimisation of their workers and leaders in the name of targeted operation in the port city and would likely to demand handing over of the city to Army to ensure launch of an even-handed operation and arrest of only those responsible for unrest in the city.
They further said Pakistan People’s Party MPs were all prepared to strongly resist the planned privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines Corporation and Pakistan Steel Mills. The PPP MPs would demand the government put off the plan and restructure both these national institutions.
The matter of holding local bodies elections on non-party basis may also figure in the debate and opposition parties will put the treasury on the mat on this issue.
PPP and ANP have already submitted separate adjournment motions on the recent hike in the prices of petroleum products and these parties will come up with strong opposition to the government decision.
On the opening day of the session, the newly elected members will be sworn in. In another major development, the chairmen of some 29 standing committees of the House would also be finalised during the current session to make these committees functional.
