Aamir to replace Wahab as PSF secretary

THE NATION, Islamabad, 10th SEPTEMBER 2013:- Curtain falls on Pakistan Squash Federation (PSF) secretary Wing Commander Abdul Wahab Marwat as he will be replaced by Group Captain Aamir Nawaz.
Marwat remained as PSF secretary for almost 23 months and that move was very much on the cards that he would be replaced sooner rather than later as the associations and tremendous pressure from certain quarters have sealed his fate.
Aamir Nawaz arrived last month and was taking guidance from Marwat and learning the day-to-day affairs of the federation. Although the PSF is keeping things secret and trying to hide the facts, yet the reliable sources told this scribe that Marwat will relinquish his office on September 12. It was second stint of Marwat with the federation as he has also worked as PSF treasurer from 1995 to 2001.
Marwat was made scapegoat as he had done reasonably well as compare to other secretaries. To his great credit, Marwat’s name was never involved in any scandal throughout his tenure, a feat which was not witnessed especially in the last secretary Irfan’s era.
Marwat was instrumental in hiring the services of coach Jamshed Gul Khan, a move which helped Pakistan win seven gold medals and one silver medal during the last two years, despite coming under tremendous pressure from some certain associations which wanted undue favours and lobbies against him but Marwat stood firm.
It was Marwat who tried to implement tough rules and regulations and tried to follow the merit, but he was left in the cold at the end. Instead of backing him in key decisions which would be very beneficial to squash and the country, he was forced to back off from imposing strict decisions.
Pakistan squash has been seeing lot of ups and downs in the last two decades and after a long time, there was a ray of hope that things might change and Pakistani players might start winning the PSA events and break into top 20 in the PSA rankings despite limited budget and very restricted appearances in PSA events. But when things were going in the right direction, all of a sudden Marwat was shown the door just to save the skin of the real culprit which is a great injustice.
Marwat was the one who managed to cut down the federation’s expenses to almost 40 percent in two years. He had done exceptional job as a secretary against all the odds.
He stood like a solid rock and faced all criticism rendered to him despite being not at fault on number of occasions. He made some good decisions and was very successful in minimizing the role of parents, who were not ready to listen to logical things and complaining.
Marwat deserves better sending off from the federation for being loyal to them as he spent hours and hours in the office even on day offs. No one in the past has given so much time to the PSF and he was always available whenever required for comments or related issues by the journalists.
The new secretary will find it really difficult to work under such demanding environment and having no previous knowledge of working at this seat. Things will further aggravate and filling Marwat’s shoes will be a very tough task for Aamir Nawaz as a first few months will determine the faith of the new secretary.
